Industrialisation and urbanisation leading to increasing pace, improper dietary styles, life styles and stress of life have resulted in marked increase in cardiovascular disease, Diabetes mellitus and other non-communicable diseases in the recent past and at present the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Sri Lanka is close to that of Western countries.
Cardiovascular diseases have become the most serious threat for premature death and disability – that is a threat to life and health at a young age. Significant population has some form of heart disease and one fourth of the adult population has hypertension. Significant number of productive age group expected to develop a major cardiovascular disease before reaching the age of 60 years and over the age of 65 years nearly 30% have heart disease.
In brief, cardiovascular disease has become a number one killer accounting for more than 40% of all deaths.
In developed countries, the parallel advances in curative and preventive treatment facilities including the medications, laboratory and medical equipment and availability of specialised investigation methods and treatment/caring of cardiac patients have changed and improved the outcome remarkably during the last decades.
However, the people in Sri Lanka do not enjoy adequate diagnostic, preventive and treatment facilities due to the larger population of patients compared to limited existing facilities. Proper screening programmes in primary prevention identify early disease and allow adequate time to take action for prevention of the particular condition or non-communicable diseases (NCD).
World Health Organization (WHO) has given priority for the prevention and early diagnosis of non-communicable diseases as a mode of reducing morbidity and mortality. However, in Sri Lanka existing such programmes are limited and do not meet the demand of the society. .
Therefore, a centre like MCARD & LABORATORY for cardiovascular disease and other non-communicable clinical conditions for curative and preventive care with a good laboratory is an essential part of the system in spite of other patient care giving centres and hospitals available in the area due to inadequate facilities and overcrowding.
Laboratory services are an integral part of prevention and diagnosis of diseases, treatment, monitoring of response to treatment, disease surveillance programmes and clinical research.
The use of diagnostic techniques aid early diagnosis enabling appropriate and prompt intervention and treatment thereby reducing overall morbidity and mortality, disease burden and promoting health in the society
.
As per the Records, the Biggest Killer is Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD). Out of those, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is recorded as the main cause of death in many parts of the world . The Coronary Artery Disease is now more prevalent in the Developing Nations than in the Developed Nations according to WHO publications . The productive age group of the country and work force is more prone and affected due to CAD. This means it is the Bread winners of the households that are facing this risk. If early detection and prevention is possible, it will be a great contributor for the economy of the country as it will ensure that the household Income will be steady without having to stop all of a sudden.
Facilities at MCARD are directed to identify this disease and assist those who are suffering from CAD and further prevent Secondary Complications. Other NCDs like Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)are also will be screened and detected early and managed at the MCARD Laboratory & Healthcare.
MCARD is in operation with OPD for all casual and regular encounters of patient’s problems . MCARD is providing facilities for Health Checks to people who are seeking Migration and overseas Employment opportunities.
